These include:
- Terrorism
- Natural disasters
- Infectious diseases
- Common accidents
However, the need for Travel Planning has never been greater, and companies are taking responsibility (legally and ethically) for training their employees. Precautionary and preventative actions can greatly reduce many risks, especially when it comes to abductions and kidnappings.
Travel planning, especially pre-travel assessments, risk evaluation, and threat mitigation allow companies and individual travelers to make informed decisions regarding safety while reducing the ramifications of potential legal and financial liabilities.
Travel Planning, Travel Risk Management, and Situational Awareness
Travel Planning (also considered Travel Risk Management or Mitigation) is a proactive approach that a traveler performs prior to, during, and after their trip. The intent is not to just respond to a crisis, but if possible, to prevent/avoid a dangerous situation. A focus on Situational Awareness is key when considering:
- Destination Research
- Education
- Risk Exposure
- Response Plans
- Emergency Action Plans (how-to-react)
Communication is the other key element for pre-travel planning. This consists of primary and alternate methods, contingencies, and emergency communication plans.
